BACKGROUND
Founded in 1966, Caterpillar (NI) Limited is Europe’s largest diesel generating set manufacturer.
The company houses eight Caterpillar divisions across four sites in Northern Ireland and has global manufacturing facilities in Brazil, China, India and the USA. The company’s products have been providing people and businesses around the world with a reliable power supply since 1966 by manufacturing and installing high quality generating sets for prime and standby power applications.
Products are exported throughout the globe and directly support key business sectors including the telecoms, healthcare, tourism/ leisure, retail and banking industries. Ranging from 6.8 – 2,200 kVA, they include open and enclosed generator sets providing both prime and standby power – from standby domestic use, right up to power modules with the ability to operate as complete power stations supplying electricity to national grids.
Since 1993, the company headquarters have been in Larne, Northern Ireland, where final assembly of the product takes place. The Monkstown facility, located five miles north of Belfast, specialises in heavy sheet metal fabrication and produces base frames and fuel tanks. The Springvale facility, located in Belfast specialises in light sheet metal fabrication and is home to the production of all enclosures and control systems. The fourth site in Northern Ireland is an office based facility located in the same business park as the Springvale manufacturing plant and this is home to the legal services team, global order fulfillment, accounts payable and the FG Wilson sales and marketing teams.
THE PROBLEM
Caterpillar NI Ltd contacted us in relation to the persistent leaks throughout the entire roof structure. We carried out a full inspection and could see that many different products and techniques had been used and applied which were simply not suitable for coating over plastic coated galvanised sheet.
Exposed cut edges had began to corrode the sheet ends causing fixings to fail leaving the sheet vulnerable and exposed to the weather.
THE SOLUTION & BENEFITS
We specified Noxyde, a water-based, single-component elastomeric roof coating, it is easy to apply and yet gives the same protection as a complicated and more expensive polyurethane system. Noxyde forms a thick anti-corrosive membrane that offers excellent protection against water, salt spray and aggressive environments. Independent research as per the ISO 12944 standard demonstrates that Noxyde is the absolute BEST in corrosive protection – it even offers more than 15 years of protection in the highest corrosion class C5-M.
